Walmart.com: HP Pavilion 17" dv7-1129wm Laptop PC w/ AMD Turion X2 RM-72 Dual-Core Processor: Computers
For months now, I've been laptop hunting, scrounging the few extra bucks I have, trying to save enough to buy a laptop. Reason being? I'm getting ready to head off into college, and I needed a decent laptop to store all of my information on, as well as be able to perform well enough to help out with my assignments.
Anyways, when I finally found this one, I recieved a suprise. My dad and mom, who've been divorced since I was an infant, have decided to pitch together and help me buy the laptop, something they haven't done in over 16 years {spend money together}. So, I'm excited, and really happy that I might be able to get the laptop I've been needing, and drooling over.
Anyways, I wanted to post the link up, see what you guys think, and if you have any suggestions. I also had a couple of questions.
What virus protection should i use? Norton? McAfee?
Should I stick with the Internet Explorer pack they gave me, or download FireFox?
And, if I think of any other questions, or if you have any suggestions, I'm open ears. Thanks for the help in advance.

ok, neither, i use kapersky. It works indefinitly, meaing u don't need to subscrive. however, after a year u have to pay for updates. Norton and i believe mcaffe stop working all togethor. Also use firefox, IE is so buggy i don't even know why i use it.
it seems likea great comp for the price.

Are you after portability? As a 17" laptop is rather large. I have a Dell 17" but it lives on a desk, i wouldnt want to be throwing it in a backpack and lugging it around. If you are going to use it as your main pc you could get a 15" one for when your mobile and when your home plug in a wireless keyboard + mouse + 22" monitor.
Antivirus > Kaspersky Internet Security
Browser > Firefox
Also make sure you find out what the situation is with the operating system. Some laptops dont come with Disks just a restore partition which is a pest you cant do a clean install without all the manufacturers junk. Also if your HDD dies you dont have a way to re-install. Others will come with restore disks which revert the laptop to how it was when you bought it (still with thier crap) and obviously the best way is to make sure it comes with a copy of the OS on DVD.
My Dell came with Restore Partition + Original Windows DVD. So i just got rid of the Restore partition

I just got a Toshiba laptop and dumped the Norton and Macafee on it because I am not gonna pay for it.Math and Spit are right.Free software for anti-virus and spam works great.I use Avast and Spybot Search and Destroy.
Portability for school is important...you are the guy that will carry it around....
I also have a few browsers I downloaded and mozilla is safer. My only problem is I have yet to configure it correctly.

yeah, i need it for mobility, but power. I don't mind too much if it's large, as long as it can handle most of the assignments that I'd come across.
as for the OS, if I am correct they give me a CD with the OS on it, so if I ever need to restore to Factory I could.
What I am looking for is reliability. This computer has the necessary power I need, it's available close by, so I could buy it without having it shipped, and the price is manageable. What I am most concerned about is the Vista 64-bit OS. Is it reliable, or a pain? Because I've heard both ends of the arguement, and I don't want to get an OS that I can't handle.

vista is reliable as long as you know what to and what not to do

Windows live can be buggy, also IE, the interface is nice and ez to use. Again disable that User account control crap.
Also avoid using any windows wizards for things like creating a network connection.

at one end of the spectrum you have the super easy os (mac osx) and then the really complicated os (vista)
there are benefits and disadvantages to both. if you want something that is super easy to use, and that isnt that tweekable, then its mac osx. if your looking for custimization though the os then get vista.
having used both os's, i would have to say that vista is overly complex. i spend alot of time finding where settings are and stuff like that. xp was way easier to use. but vista is livable. dont let those mac ads get to you. as long as you turn off uneccessary components, (such as that super annoying user account control) your good to go.

I've been using a crack of Nod32. Great anti-virus. I forgot who it was here that mentioned it to me. For antispyware, I use Spybot- Search and Destroy.

well, my dad and mom talked it over, and it is decided. They agreed to buy the laptop, and I'm gonna help them out however I can. Im already looking at Student Edition software programs, such as Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Publisher, and I'm also looking into any accessories, such as a wireless mouse, {for easier useage whenever possible}, Bluetooth attachments {to swap pics for easier media control}, headset w/ mic, {for possible internet classes}, and I'm also looking into part-time jobs nearby, that way I can help pay for the laptop.

Best advice in this thread is to clear out the initial install of the OS that comes with the system. HP is especially known for throwing a bunch of crap on the system so you're going to want to reformat it right away.
If you're not too good with customizing your OS or Vista is too complicated for you got get "Tweak Vista" you pay for it once and updates are free forever.
Spybot is a must have for spyware and Firefox will help cut down on it even more.

about the software, wait until you are actually in the university, then buy the software through the university.
do not go out and buy the software now.

Make sure it comes with the disks needed to reinstall the os first, some don't come with disks and expect you to make a restore point.
