Item colurs

I just wanted to know about the item colours. I know u can change the color of an item but i dont know how. I was wondering if someone could explain to me how to change an item's color.

I'm not sure but I think, in Hero Editor, change the class of the item to a Unique, and certain uniques have certain colors, example, Swordgaurd is bright white. I think.

I had a helmet once and it was socketed with two gems and i dont know what but it changed the color of the helmet to like purple......

so I thought it would be if you socketed something, but what do I know, Im a noob
