The main thing you want to learn is where the notes are on your guitar and thier octaves. Also learn all the major chords. Thats a major foundation for playing. The chords will make learning songs much easier and learning the octaves will help you scale (solo). If you guys need any tips pm me. Ive been playing 12 years so I know a little bit lol.

the learning of anything/everything isn't gonna help you if you truely don't have the desire to learn it. if you have to say "okay, i have to practice my 2 hours today." and you gotta work it into your schedule, the drive isn't there. imo, if you really want it, you'll have to work other things into your schedule because of guitar.

that's about the only way you'll get to be a 'guitar hero.' you can't just learn all the textbook lessons and then magically turn into dimebag or something. you can know every chord, note, octave, scale, mode, or whatever... but if you can't use them in a musical manner, what's it worth?

Well thats a given. You have to train your ear too but thats later on.

Ah the best tip I can give you is do not give up. Be determined to be the best guitar player you can be, even though it can get very frustrating at times.
One of the hardest things to learn is the transfers...When I first started that drove me crazy

1st thing u need to learn is the basic notes on ur guitar, or aka what note the little dots are. second if u ever plan on making ur own songs. you need to learn what a key is and how to play in that key. 3rd, the best things to play to develop speed and smoothness are scales. I know they are boring they honestly really help. If u ever practice a speed method or an exercise always use a metronome or a drum beat. It doesnt help to have a guitarist that cant keep a beat

It's very true, you may want to be a realy good player, but in the end it's just about enjoying your time spent. If you can enjoy the time you spend on the guitar, that's more important than being able to play whatever it is guitarists do realy well (lol), I'm a pianist so i don't know much about this, but all I know is the desire to play is more important than putting in x amount of hours per day.

You could always just sell your soul to satan to be able to play. Thats what Jimmy page did.

well getting a guitar teacher always helps, sure helped me get through a playing slump of boredom of improvisation and such. i started with learning each note on each fret of the guitar, i had a pretty large musical background so learning that wasn't much for me but i don't know about you. i'd learn the notes in the first position up to the g which is the third fret on the low e and high e because after that it's just octaves and you should be able to figure out what note comes after what after learning that, then i'd recommend learning basic chord progressions, I IV V7, ect like A D E7, progressions and strumming along to shit like that then progressing on to learning some basic scales, pentatonic, major scales, ect then learning to improv with the newly learned scales over the newly learned chord progressions. Eh, there's so much shit to learn and it can seem overwhelming but learning to play guitar and getting good at guitar takes a lot of time and a lot of practice and if you're just going to quit after a year or so i wouldn't even bother starting to begin with. but if you have to desire / passion to play i say go for it

I have seen guitars that hook up through your USB, and that give lessons with lights on the actuall fret itself showing you where to place your fingers. Just a thought...

Your fingers will hurt like hell for the first week or so of playing (assuming you practice a decent ammount)

play through it, it'll stop hurting =]

LOL yeah your fingers harden up, just like when you play sports. Just keep at it and your fingers will get conditioned to it!
